The Last Account
The Last Account follows Vale, a third-generation Martian shopkeeper, after a murder transforms Lowell General into the center of a mystery rooted in the colony’s buried history. Guided by a suspicious but ultimately benevolent AI and Pip, a genetically modified cat whose innocent observations reveal unexpected truths, Vale discovers how memory can be altered by guilt, loyalty, and fear. The story asks what happens to a community when preserving a comforting lie becomes more important than facing the damage beneath it.
The Last Account is an example of sustained, human–AI literary collaboration in which the machine operated as a responsive writing instrument within an extended process of human authorship, revision, and visual development.
The Last Account began as an experiment in literary recombination. Fifteen readily available PDF editions of well-known novels and writings served—not to train an AI model, but as a depository for concepts, language, and narrative possibilities. One sentence from each work was selected and arranged into five sequences that became a kind of literary DNA: fragments of atmosphere, themes and rhythms, all used to start a new story.
Through an extended exchange with AI and multiple rewrites, human input repeatedly reshaped the plot, characters, architecture, chronology, language, philosophical themes, and visual world. The final work emerged through sustained direction, selection, rejection, and revision, with AI functioning as a responsive creative instrument.
